Botox & Fillers Q & A

How do Botox and fillers work?

Although Botox and fillers have the same end result — visibly smoother skin — the way each one works is different. Botox is a botulinum injection that interacts with brain signals that cause muscle contractions. Shortly after it’s injected, Botox forces your muscles to relax, which ultimately allows your skin to smooth out naturally.

Fillers are designed to replace lost volume or fill in areas where you wish you had more plumpness. JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® products, including Lyft™, Defyne™, and Refyne™, are synthetic hyaluronic acid gel fillers.

As the gel filler substance plumps your skin, hyaluronic acid attracts moisture for optimal volume-boosting effects. Hyaluronic acid goes a step further and stimulates collagen production, so as the injections wear off, you’re left with naturally firmer skin.

Although Botox and fillers are separate treatments, in some cases, it’s best to combine them for superior results.

What can Botox and fillers treat?

Botox and fillers are most commonly requested for their anti-aging benefits. But these safe and effective injectables can do so much more. You should consider Botox and fillers to:

  • Plump your lips
  • Smooth out crow’s feet near your eyes
  • Decrease frown lines between your brows
  • Minimize smile lines around your mouth
  • Contour your cheeks and jawline

During your consultation, Dr. McMullen or aesthetic expert Lindsay, counsel you on which type of injectable is right for you, so you can make an educated decision on your treatment path.

How long do Botox and fillers last?

Botox and fillers are long-lasting, although their effects are only temporary. In most cases, Botox provides optimal results for up to four months. Fillers last even longer. Depending on the type of filler you select with Dr. McMullen, you can experience plumper, fuller skin for 12-24 months.

Is it painful to get Botox and fillers?

Since Botox and fillers utilize very thin needles, any discomfort you do experience is minimal and well-tolerated. Dr. McMullen wants to ensure your Botox and filler appointment is as comfortable and painless as possible. He offers topical numbing solutions that you can apply before your appointment to minimize any stinging from the needle.
